White Gold wins over judges

Coffee roasting is a serious business to Bruce and Wendy McKenzie. Having only opened Aurum Espresso and Coffee Roasters less than a year before, they made a strong impression at the 2007 New Zealand Coffee Festival in Auckland. Competing against more than 150 other coffee roasters, including much larger ones, the Heretaunga Street business won silver in the Best New Zealand Organic Blend section for its Aurum Organic blend, and bronze in the Best New Zealand Roasted Espresso Blend section for its White Gold.
Wendy says she knew the latter was something special as it was in hot demand not long after it went on sale. "We were ecstatic and very proud when we heard how we went. It was a pity that we could only enter one blend in each category, as we had some other ones we didn't send."
Blending coffee isn't a simple process. It demands skill, passion, artistry and "knowing the particular taste you are after".
"Bruce and I really love what we do. We are very proud of our original coffee."
